The VanDrie Group’s quality system is called Safety Guard and is based on HACCP. The company achieves the highest conceivable level of hygiene. With Safety Guard, ESA has imposed standards on itself that surpass the international standards. In addition to HACCP standards, Safety Guard also meets the BRC (British Retail Consortium) standard and the IFS standard. The independent Lloyd’s Register is responsible for auditing the effectiveness of the systems twice a year.


All our veal is monitored by the Foundation for Quality Guarantee of the Veal Sector (SKV) from the beginning to the end of the production process. SKV-monitored veal is guaranteed to be free of undesirable growth promoters.

SKV monitoring in detail

  • Participation in the SKV quality system is voluntary.
  • Veal farmers, processors and calf feed producers are all welcome to participate in the SKV quality system.
  • Veal farmers/veal processors participate in the SKV quality system because they are proud of their

  • More than 95% of the Dutch veal sector is associated with the SKV.
  • Unanounced administrative and visual checks are held at all links of the production chain.
  • Unanounced product sampling takes place throughout the entire production process.

  • All SKV auditors are independent and impartial.

An independent Scientific Council continuously works to assure the monitoring and analysis methods employed by the SKV.

The SKV has been accredited by the Dutch Accreditation Council ( for its inspection activities (performed in accordance with NEN-EN-17020) and its certification activities (performed in accordance with NEN-EN 17065).

IKB Integral supply chain management

There are two Integral Chain Management (IKB) schemes for calves: one for white veal calves and one for rosé veal calves. The IKB scheme includes guidelines for veal farmers, veal processors, calf transporters, and the collection points where calves are marshalled.

The key points of the IKB are:

  • Welfare and housing.
  • Reducing the use of antibiotics.
  • Cooperation with certified vets and the associated use of company health and treatment plans.
  • Use, storage and registration of veterinary medicines.
  • Hygiene (cleaning and disinfecting).
  • Animal feed and drinking water.
  • Transport registration.
  • Animal registration.
